Research
Since coming to Westminster I have begun to work with a group of undergraduate research students to study the the brine shrimp Artemia that live in Great Salt Lake (GSL). Artemia is the only animal that spends its entire life in the lake are an important food source for migrating birds. Encysted brine shrimp embryos are harvested from GSL and shipped around the world for use as food in aquaculture.
Our major focus is to better understand the genes and genome of Artemia: specifically what changes in gene expression occur during different stages of the unusual life cycle of Artemia and which genes are involved in the response of the brine shrimp to environmental stress. In collaboration with other Westminster faculty, I am working with several students to examine gene expression changes in Artemia after treatment with selenium and other stressors, and we have used molecular techniques to characterize microbes found in association with the brine shrimp.
I am also interested in signaling networks and complex systems in development as well as the evolution of developmental mechanisms.
