Portfolio for
The Complete Photographic Process
Workshop

I will be attending a photographic workshop September 29 through October 4, 1997, with Bruce Barnbaum and Don Kirby. Bruce does many workshops. This particular one, called The Complete Photographic Process, will be just outside Granite Falls, Washington, where Bruce lives. The workshop is devoted to black and white photography from the exposure of the negative to the mounting and spotting of the print.

Although I am excited by all aspects of the workshops, my main interest in the workshop will be the darkroom work. The skills and techniques I hope to learn or improve on are development of high quality negatives, negative intensification, printing on variable contrast papers, advanced burning and dodging techniques, selective flashing (not that kind of flashing), and potassium ferricyanide bleaching (for highlighting selected areas or bringing out hidden details in a print).

One of the aspects of the workshop is a critique of my pre-workshop photographs by the instructors. I am in the process of putting together a portfolio of 10 to 12 photographs to take to the workshop. Thumbnails of the photographs are shown below. I will add new ones as I finish printing them.

Note: The scans of these prints don't do justice to the tonal separation and detail in the original photographs (we always say this - hey, you haven't seen the originals, how are you going to know.).
