  • The Mathematical Association of America   is the largest professional society of college and university mathematics teachers in the world. Its purpose is to "assist in promoting the interest of  mathematics in America, especially in the collegiate field." (quoted from the 1915 charter of the MAA).  Members include college and university faculty, two-year college faculty, high school teachers, government and corporate workers, graduate school faculty, research mathematicians, and graduate and undergraduate students.   There are 29 geographical regions of the MAA; the Intermountain Section encompasses members in Utah and Southern Idaho
  •  Associate National Director of  the Women & Mathematics Network (formerly called the "WAM" program) , 1995-1998
  • Utah coordinator for W&M, 1984-1998

  • The MAA administers the  Women and Mathematics Network,  a group of enrichment and intervention programs designed to steer students toward careers in mathematics, science, and technology.   Programs are varied, from one-day hands-on math workshops to summer camps to longer term mentoring.  Many include career advising.  W&M career advisors -- women whose professions require a strong working knowledge of  mathematics -- visit schools and provide free services, such as making presentations, attending career days, and answering students' questions.
The Utah W&M program was active from 1984 - 1998, sending mentors into the schools and participating in career days and Expanding Your Horizons conferences (see below).
  • Chair, 1997 Expanding Your Horizons Conference, March 1, 1997, Westminster College
  • Chair, 1998 Expanding Your Horizons Conference, March 21, 1998, Westminster College

The 1997 conference involved 450 junior high school young women in hands-on workshops in a variety of math and science fields.  The workshops were conducted by professional women from the community.  You can click on the picture at the left to see other images from this conference.

Expanding Your Horizons Conferences are held nation-wide each year.  The most recent conference in Utah was in Ogden, Utah at Mount Ogden Middle School on November 1, 2003. For information about that conference, contact Marilyn O’Dell at maodell@aol.com.

For more information about Expanding Your Horizons conferences in other locations, contact  the sponsoring organization,  The Math/Science Network at Mills College in California.
