EDNET

EDNET is the name given to the distance learning educational network of classrooms either hard wired or connected by microwave throughout Utah. These classrooms are located usually in high schools and are used to provide a central location for teaching subjects statewide. An example of EDNET use might result from a student request for a course not readily available at their school, say Russian. With just a few students at any particular high school wanting to learn the language, school districts find it much more financially and pedagogically effective to "broadcast" the course through the state using the EDNET system headquartered at the University of Utah. Training upon this system and developing and presenting a lesson through EDNET is a Distance Learning Endorsement requirement. Classes using this network have quadrupled in number in the last three years. With extensive teacher number shortfalls expected in 2005 the number of course offerings using the EDNET system is expected to increase dramatically.
