The road winding down the center of the photo was probably the same way that Jesus was taken after being captured by the Roman soldiers. Commemorating Jesus' betrayal by Judas on the top of the Mount of Olives, down to Pilate's judgment in the city, then to the crucifixtion, death and burial, this road with its continuation in Jerusalem has been called the Via Dolorosa, or Way of Sorrows. (Photo by M. Markowski) In the early 16th century, the Catholic Church adopted the liturgy from Jerusalem churches of the "Stations of the Cross" which represented events of that day. Each year on Good Friday, many people turn out in Jerusalem to re-enact the scene, complete with crosses to carry. |
