Stonehenge -- the well-known circle of massive stones -- was probably pre-Celtic. The questions we often put to Stonehenge are not conclusively answered: Who? How? Why? As far as "What?" it seems to have something to do with the course of the sun and may well have been a structure to set the calendar. That much seems likely, but anything else is supported only by scanty evidence and educated guesswork.

In my view, it remains a mystery but may serve to motivate people to solve those questions, rather like the earlier mysteries of Troy, Mycenae and the Minoan Civilizations -- they inspired creative and outstanding people to search for, and somethimes find, answers.
