Oxford and Cambridge were the earliest (12th century) Universities in England. This view of the famous spires of Oxford was no doubt inspiring to a great many students, including myself for too-short a time. (Entrance to one of the oldest colleges at Oxford, University College.)

       The "Twelfth-Century Renaissance" finds solid expression in the colleges and universities of Europe and also, the beginning of that peculiar form of Medieval Torture known as the Liberal Education Requirement! It was (and is) thought that a well-rounded education would best serve individuals as they live through various jobs, occupations and trials.
