It was built to accomodate crusaders who were on their way following Richard Lionheart in response to the Battle of Hattin. The Third Crusade may not have resulted in very much, except restoring a rump Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem (without Jerusalem), but it did result in the creation of this fine pub built right into the mountain, as well as resulting in communication, learning, travel, controversy, crusade-splintering, colonialism(?), and one or two famous myths.
