"Jean Callas was arrested, tried, found guilty and executed etc...." Actually, Voltaire originally thought Callas HAD killed his son so that his son would die as a Protestant, not become a Catholic. Voltaire was horrified at this excess of religion where father murdered son. Later, Voltaire became convinced of Callas' innocence, and he was horrified at the injustice where the Catholic state murdered its Protestant sons. Either way a horrific, excessive injustice of religion-superstition (and neither 'turning the other cheek, loving enemies'...) So while this incident may be ambiguous as to 'who-done-it', Voltaire saw that the same hatreds were at work either way, hatreds that needed to go.

      Now, in the 20th century, rationalism did reign, and (gimme a 'Harumph') we've killed more people in 20th-century wars, in the name of secular ideals, than all other wars of all history combined. Seems like a change is due once again. Now, what's happening in the Middle East....
