Odds & Ends

Still confused about some things?  Here's a list of miscellaneous tips for the organization of your paper.  If you are still unsure of something, consult A Manual for Writers by Kate Turabian.

*  Number each page in the upper right corner.

*  Make a title page that includes your name, class name, professor, date, title, etc.  Consult Turabian for specifics on how to organize the title page.

*  Use semicolons correctly.  There are many ways to use them, but these are the most common:
    1.  When you have two or more sentences that you would like the reader to understand as a single thought.
    2.  To separate cleanly items in a series.

*  Use commas wherever there is a light, natural pause.
    --also, conjunctive adverbs such as however, therefore, then, or besides, when placed in the middle of a sentence need to be set apart by commas.  (i.e. "My mom, however, hates peas.")

*  Use dashes to
    1.  Mark an interruption or break in thought.
    2.  To isolate a phrase.
    Avoid overuse, however, because they are annoying to the reader.

*  Avoid using exclamation points!

*  Avoid cliches, but if you do use one don't put it in quotation marks.
