| The Dome of the Rock or Mosque of Omar
-- this beautiful structure has also been called the
Noble Sanctuary. Some crusaders believed it to be the Templum Domini or part of the original Temple of Solomon (which actually was destroyed by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar in 586 B.C.). (Photo, M. Markowski, 1987) |
Built about 700 A.D. (or 68 A.H.) on the rocky top
of Mount Moriah, this structure probably was meant to commemorate
Muhammed's miraculous 'Night Journey' from Mecca to Jerusalem.
This Journey included some of Heaven's highest revelations to The
Prophet.
