As has been expounded
throughout this site, the Popol Vuh contains a system of morals, the
most prominent among them being the importance of thought and praise
to the gods, avoiding "self-magnification", and the value
of courage. The Popol Vuh, throughout the account of the creation of the earth until the tribes' conflict, shows the value of thought and praising the gods to the Mayans. A constant theme is the putting down of "self-magnification." Seven Macaw and the opposing tribes to the Quiché both become prideful and the gods bring them down due to that pride. The adventures of Xbalanque and Hunauhpu along with the defense of the Quiché exemplify the value of courage.
The Popol Vuh is an outstanding piece of literature representing Mayan morals. Click here for VII.
